Some of the biggest investments in human
development today are made by the private sector. In
an effort to display corporate environmental and social
responsibility, leading companies are applying the
precautionary approach and looking ahead to the
environmental and social impacts of their operations.
They need briefings on local ecological conditions,
sensitive and fragile environments, and partners with
whom they can work to conserve ecosystem processes
and the living environment.
Sustainable development is about leaving nature in a
condition that will serve future generations as well as
it has served our own. Young people must be engaged
in the dialogue early enough to understand and
influence future decisions. Educators and students
need information in a form that is useful, accessible,
affordable and, perhaps most importantly,
authoritative.
